| The Eco-committee have been responsible for recycling waste paper in the school and nursery for several weeks and last week they received a visit in the primary lab from Sarah Evans, Waste Education Officer, from the Schools Waste Action Club (SWAC), Bexley Council, to learn how to convert the waste paper into recycled paper.
The children learned how the paper could be soaked and shredded before being blended into pulp. The pulp was then coloured with paint and decorated with glitter. The pulp was added to water in a deep tray and mixed. The mesh frame was immersed in the pulp and trawled backwards and forwards six or seven times before being lifted out of the pulp and the water allowed to drain off.
Next, the frame was inverted onto 7 layers of j-cloth and sponged to remove any more water. Finally, the pulp sheet was covered with a pad of newspaper and flipped over before peeling back the j-cloth leaving the sheet of pulp to dry into a recycled sheet of paper.
On Wednesday, the Eco-committee demonstrated their skill and their paper to the rest of KS2 in Assembly. They will be helping some of their teachers and Year 7 teachers to run a lesson for their classes in paper-making. Hopefully, some of the recycled paper will be popping up all over the school in the children's work and displays.
The more paper that we can recycle the fewer trees we will destroy and the less carbon dioxide there will be in the atmosphere to increase global warming. Well done to all the children who give their time to help in this worthwhile project. The future is theirs and they are helping to protect it.
