Match Report by Jack Duvall, Year 9

As the match began the atmosphere from both teams was buzzing. There were high hopes from both the home and away sides leading into the match. As the match began the ball was played round by the Mayflower players until the ball was stolen by an up and coming defender Daniel Hunt. He then played the ball out to the right back Jamie Raisin, he then played a pin point pass down the line to playmaker Nad Nwitua who used his skill to cut inside and smacked it hard and low into the bottom corner, it was one to nothing with only five minutes gone.

As the half-time whistle was approaching the winds grew stronger and the rain got heavier and with no chances from the Mayflower side they looked like they were struggling to get attacks down the right, left and down the middle, but it didnt stop there it got worse when the ball was cleared forward from captain Junior Agepong and Joe McDermott was fouled, the same player stepped up to take the kick just about twenty yards away from the Mayflower goal, Joe cracked it and the wind took the ball with it causing it to float away from the keeper's hands and into the back of the net. Two goals now and BBA looked to be cruising, there could only be positive things said from the gaffer at half time

The half-time whistle came and the gaffer called the players in a circle and told them to sit down and have a drink. The comments were positive and encouraging towards the BBA team, the manager's words were long but sweet; this is what he said, "A two nil lead is good enough to win this game but if you let your work rate down you will lose this game for definite. There is only one thing that I want you to do and that's keep your work rate up and commit yourself to this team, are you going to lay down and give up or are you going to stand up and make yourself known it's all up to you men to take us to the next round of this cup". The team huddled and then the gaffer continued, "If you are willing to commit yourself you will win this game". The team screamed with emotion and ran to their starting positions.

When the second half kicked off the wind was playing in the home team's direction it was a hard ten minutes for the home side but when the ball was played up the field it bounced into the school's top goal scorer Lanre Balogun who still had it all to do, he out strengthened the Mayflower defender and slotted it home, it was a brilliant finish, it was maybe the best goal that he had scored but it was certainly the most important. The players still couldn't lie back when the Mayflower players were starting to spring into action, they pulled one back with about 15 minutes left when the right mid-fielder of Mayflower picked out a great option and put into the striker who put it away.

So it was three to one with about ten minutes left but it wasn't three for long, it then increased into four when Nad got the ball on the right and played a through ball into Lanre who passed it low to David Afolabi, a recent top former, he won the battle to the ball and wonderfully rolled the ball into the bottom corner. One member of the BBA staff shouted, "You deserved that". And the game had to be ours. But Mayflower hit back in just three minutes with a ball on the right leaving left midfielder Thomas Biggs, who played really well, chasing the attacking player. He didnt manage to get there leaving an open space for the player to slot a pass past the left back, another favourite, Jack Duvall and then the player popped the ball underneath one of the best goalies in the country Isaac Ige. BBA held out for the rest of the match and when the final whistle blew there was good sportsmanship everywhere and celebrations from the winning side. The final score was BBA 4-2 Mayflower.

Scoop for Primary Reporters

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Gifted and Talented Primary students had a taste of life as a journalist when they visited the Newspaper Education Trust at Docklands. The students learnt the skills needed to lay out a successful newspaper frontpage including researching and writing headlines and articles, designing a masthead and laying out the front page. Each pair of students produced the frontpage for their own newspaper with stories that they had researched themselves. Two of the pairs were lucky enough to have their frontpages displayed on the Newspaper Education Trust's website. The staff involved congratulated all the students on their hard work and exemplary behaviour.

You can see examples of two of the students' newspapers:
Issue 1 and Issue 2.

All newspaper frontpages produced will soon be on display in our Galleries.
