Reading Lists

Reading for Enjoyment

Learning outcomes:

• All students should have done some independent reading
• Most students will have been reading a whole book
• All students will have discussed their reading
• All students will have demonstrated their appreciation of their book though some kind of form
• Most students will have developed their appreciation for reading
• Most students will have explored the importance of reading and discussed the impact of being a good reader on their success in the rest of the curriculum

Suggested activities

• Use the National Literacy Trust website for ideas and articles about reading
• Find examples of celebrities who read
• During your first lesson brainstorm “Why read”
• Use the data we have - find out their reading ages and then look at books that will suit them
• Find out what interests your students and then talk to Clare about appropriate reading material
• Students could keep a reading journal and at the end of each session could write a mini response to what they have read
• Use a deep display in your room that could be added to every lesson - e.g. a reading tree with a branch for each student
• Look at different genres of texts and then have small groups reading from particular genres. You could then bring them together
• Write book reviews (there are many frames for these around)
• Silent reading every lesson
• You must have a task which demonstrates what they have done this term. Possible formats are:
- a book review
- an ongoing book project
- a piece of art inspired by the book
- a character profile
- an oral presentation
- a power point presentation
- a piece of drama
- a dramatic monologue
