Brilliant Club at BAB

This term The Academy is launching an exciting new project for our Gifted and Talented Year 11 students, called The Brilliant Club! The programme’s aim is to widen access to the UK’s best universities by connecting outstanding secondary school students and PhD students from top universities. The Academy has signed up for a two-year project which will take our Year 11 students into their first year of the Sixth Form and ensure that they get the most out of this amazing opportunity.

The PhD student will provide university-style tutorials over a period of six weeks to a group of eighteen Year 11 students, on the theme of ‘Philosophy’. Through these tutorials, and the pre-reading that will need to be completed alongside them, students will have the chance to explore issues surrounding terrorism, and reflect on the question of whether using violence to achieve a goal can ever be justified. This is designed to provide an intellectual challenge that takes students above and beyond their current key stage, and this challenge will culminate with their complete on of a 2,500 word extended essay. Once this is handed in, they will get to attend their very own graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements on the first half of this two-year programme.

The eighteen students who have been successful in their application to be a part of The Brilliant Club are now in an extremely privileged position. Not only will they have the chance to discover more about their options with regards to higher education, and what university life will be like, but they will also be developing the very skills that universities look for when deciding which applicants to accept onto their courses. These skills include effective research, critical thinking, verbal communication, essay writing and self-reflection. These skills will also prove to be invaluable when students make the leap to Key Stage 5 learning.

The official launch of the programme is Friday 10th February, when our eighteen lucky students will travel to the Teach First offices in Central London to meet their new tutor, Igor Rogelja, from SOAS (the School of Oriental and African Studies) and be given their first reading assignment
